Fish or Foul?

For me, the toughest time of year to catch Crappies is late January or early February. The fish are not thick on the brush piles, and they haven’t moved into the creeks yet. Try as you might, sometimes the fish just won’t bite.

So what do you do when the fishing gets tough? Go huntin’! Hey even the ole Crappie Killer needs a break now and then.

Hunting is a great way to spend some spare time. Especially when the fish won’t cooperate.  My choice at this tough time of year is upland bird hunting. Yes upland birds, like Quail, Pheasant and Chucker. Now you may not have a lot of these birds running around in your backyard. Most of us are not that fortunate. However, there are a few places that do have these birds running around, literally.

Pheasants, Chuckers and Quail are all very challenging targets. And each makes great table fare. But first you have to find a place to hunt them. Second, you have to be able to hit them!

Recently I was invited to hunt a place in South Central Oklahoma. Blue River Hunting Adventures is located in Millburn Oklahoma. Just North of Lake Texoma, about two hours from Dallas Texas, this licensed hunting preserve offers some outstanding hunting. Professional guides with award winning hunting dogs, will put you on the birds in a hurry.

My choice for this trip was Pheasant. I was allowed to take seven birds, if I could. Fortunately my old Mossberg 20 gauge was able to knock ‘em down. In years past I was a good shot. After not firing this gun for several years I was skeptical. However after getting the first bird with the first shot, my butterflies went away and I was able to relax and enjoy a picture perfect Midwest day.

With temperatures in the mid sixties and a light South West wind, it was indeed a picture perfect day. I was able to bag my limit of seven birds by noon.

Blue River Hunting Adventures is owned and operated by Don Rowland. They have been operating as a licensed hunting preserve since 2000. Don boasts a fine group of hunting dogs, mostly pointers with a few setters. I was fortunate to be able to hunt with Rick Needham and his fine pointer Lancer. Lancer went down a groundhog whole after one of the birds I had winged. Now that’s a good dog!

Hunts at Blue River Hunting Adventures start at $200. They can arrange just about any combination you would like. Pheasants in the morning and Quail in the afternoon is just one example. Just let Don know what you would like and he will accommodate you. Spring turkey hunts will be available on a limited basis.

You can reach Don Rowland at 580-443-5625 or Rick Needham at 580-443-5755. This preserve is an easy 2-hour drive from Dallas Texas. I urge you to give Don and his crew a call the next time the Crappie’s won’t cooperate. I guarantee you will have a good time and that the birds will cooperate.
